Antithrombin Activity Functional Test
Introduction to the Antithrombin Activity Functional Test
The Antithrombin Activity Functional Test is a vital diagnostic tool used to evaluate the function of antithrombin, a protein in the blood that plays a crucial role in regulating blood coagulation. By measuring the activity of this protein, healthcare providers can assess a patient’s risk for thromboembolic disorders, which can lead to serious health complications such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
What the Test Measures
This test specifically measures the functional activity of antithrombin in the blood. Low levels or dysfunctional antithrombin can indicate increased risk for clotting disorders, making this test essential for individuals with a history of thromboembolic events.
Who Should Consider This Test?
Patients who may need this test include:
- Individuals with a personal or family history of thromboembolic disorders.
- Patients experiencing unexplained blood clots.
- Individuals undergoing evaluation for anticoagulant therapy.
Symptoms may include swelling, pain, or redness in the limbs, especially after prolonged inactivity or surgery.
Benefits of Taking the Test
Taking the Antithrombin Activity Functional Test can provide several benefits:
- Early detection of potential clotting disorders.
- Guidance for treatment options and management of anticoagulation therapy.
- Informed decisions regarding lifestyle and health management to prevent thromboembolic events.
Understanding Your Results
Results from the Antithrombin Activity Functional Test will indicate the level of antithrombin activity in your blood. Normal results typically suggest adequate anticoagulation function, while low results may prompt further investigation and management. It is essential to discuss your results with your healthcare provider for a comprehensive understanding.

Sample Collection and Pre-Test Instructions
The sample required for this test is 3 mL of whole blood collected in a blue top (sodium citrate) tube. It is crucial to mix the sample thoroughly by inversion and transport it to the lab within 4 hours. If this is not possible, prepare platelet-poor plasma (PPP) within 1 hour of collection by centrifuging the sample at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes, transferring the supernatant to a clean plastic tube, and freezing it immediately.
Overnight fasting is preferred, and it is recommended to discontinue heparin for 1 day and oral anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling, as these medications may affect test results. A duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory.
