ADAMTS13 Activity Test
Introduction to the ADAMTS13 Activity Test
The ADAMTS13 Activity Test is a specialized diagnostic tool used to assess the activity of the ADAMTS13 enzyme in the blood. This enzyme plays a crucial role in the regulation of blood clotting by cleaving von Willebrand factor (vWF), which is essential for proper platelet function. Understanding the activity of ADAMTS13 is vital in diagnosing and managing various coagulation disorders, including Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP).
What the Test Measures
This test measures the functional activity of the ADAMTS13 enzyme. A deficiency or dysfunction of this enzyme can lead to excessive clot formation, resulting in serious health complications. By evaluating the activity levels of ADAMTS13, healthcare providers can make informed decisions regarding patient management and treatment.
Who Should Consider This Test?
Individuals who may need the ADAMTS13 Activity Test include:
- Patients exhibiting symptoms of unexplained thrombocytopenia (low platelet count).
- Individuals with signs of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia.
- Patients with a family history of coagulation disorders.
- Those who have experienced recurrent episodes of thrombosis.
If you have any of these symptoms or risk factors, consult your healthcare provider about the necessity of this test.
Benefits of Taking the Test
Taking the ADAMTS13 Activity Test offers several benefits:
- Accurate diagnosis of coagulation disorders, particularly TTP.
- Guidance for appropriate treatment options.
- Monitoring of patients with known coagulation issues.
- Peace of mind for patients and their families.
Understanding Your Results
Results from the ADAMTS13 Activity Test will indicate the level of enzyme activity in your blood. Normal results suggest adequate enzyme function, while low levels may indicate a deficiency. Your healthcare provider will interpret your results in the context of your symptoms and medical history, guiding further management.

Sample Collection and Pre-Test Instructions
The sample required for the ADAMTS13 Activity Test is 3 mL of whole blood collected in a Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tube. It is crucial to mix the sample thoroughly by inversion and transport it to the lab within 4 hours. If immediate transport is not possible, prepare platelet-poor plasma (PPP) by centrifuging the sample at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes, transferring the supernatant to a clean plastic tube, and freezing it immediately. Overnight fasting is preferred, and a duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory.
