In plain language

What this test helps you understand

This test aids in the diagnosis of malignancies, inflammatory conditions, and infections by examining cells present in various body fluids. It is crucial for early detection and guiding treatment decisions.
The Cytology Examination Body Fluids Test is a diagnostic tool used to analyze various body fluids. This includes ascitic (abdominal), pleural (chest), and pericardial (around the heart) fluids, among others. This test is important for the early detection of cancer and other serious health conditions. By examining the cellular structure and composition of these fluids, healthcare providers can gain insights into underlying health issues.

This test measures the presence of abnormal cells in body fluids, which can indicate conditions like cancer. The examination uses microscopy techniques on stained smears to analyze cell morphology.

Patients experiencing symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, persistent cough, or unusual changes in bodily fluids should consider this test. Individuals with risk factors for cancer, like a family history or exposure to carcinogens, are also encouraged to undergo this test.

Benefits include early detection of diseases, a non-invasive procedure, providing critical information for treatment planning, and monitoring treatment effectiveness.

Results are typically available the next working day. A healthcare professional will interpret the results and discuss any abnormal findings or necessary next steps.

PreparationNo specific patient preparation is required for this test. However, confirm with your doctor or the laboratory if you are on any medications.
SampleBody fluids such as ascitic, pleural, pericardial, CSF, synovial, prostatic, urethral, bronchial washings, lavage, sputum, or second morning urine specimen.
MethodologyMicroscopic examination of stained smears (e.g., Papanicolaou, MGG) prepared from the submitted body fluid sample.
PrivacyYour sample and report are handled confidentially. Ask the team how your information is stored and shared.
The test's accuracy depends on the quality and quantity of the sample provided. A negative result does not completely rule out disease. False negatives or positives can occur. Interpretation requires correlation with clinical findings and other tests.

Questions people ask

Frequently asked questions

We accept ascitic, pleural, pericardial, CSF, synovial, prostatic, urethral, bronchial washings, lavage, sputum, or second morning urine specimens.
Samples should be collected in a sterile screw-capped container. Mix with equal quantities of 50% alcohol or centrifuge, make smears, and fix in absolute alcohol. Specimens in syringes are not accepted. Confirm specific instructions with the lab.
The collection of body fluids may cause some discomfort, but the laboratory analysis itself is non-invasive.
Results are typically available the next working day, but this can vary. Please confirm the expected turnaround time with the laboratory.
A positive result indicates the presence of abnormal cells. Your doctor will interpret the findings in the context of your overall health and may recommend further tests or treatment.
