Cytology Fine Needle Aspiration FNAC Test
Introduction to the Cytology Fine Needle Aspiration FNAC Test
The Cytology Fine Needle Aspiration (FNAC) Test is a critical diagnostic procedure used to evaluate lumps or masses in the body, particularly in the breast and superficial tissues. This minimally invasive technique allows healthcare providers to obtain tissue samples for cytological analysis, aiding in the early detection of cancer and other abnormalities.
What the Test Measures
The FNAC test measures and detects the presence of abnormal cells in aspirated tissue samples. By examining these cells under a microscope, pathologists can identify signs of malignancy or other pathological conditions.
Who Should Consider This Test
This test is recommended for individuals who present with:
- Unexplained lumps or masses in the breast or other superficial areas.
- Previous imaging studies suggesting abnormalities.
- Risk factors for cancer, including family history or genetic predispositions.
Benefits of Taking the Test
- Minimally invasive procedure with quick recovery.
- Provides rapid diagnosis, allowing for timely treatment decisions.
- Reduces the need for more invasive surgical biopsies.
- Performed by experienced oncologists and surgeons, ensuring high-quality care.
Understanding Your Results
Results from the FNAC test are typically available by the next working day. A cytopathologist will analyze the samples and provide a detailed report indicating whether cancerous cells are present. It is essential to discuss the results with your healthcare provider to understand the implications and next steps.
