Sample Collection and Pre-Test Instructions
The sample required for this test includes:
- 3 mL (1 mL min.) whole blood in 1 Lavender Top (EDTA) tube (Ship refrigerated, DO NOT FREEZE)
- 6 mL whole blood in 2 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tubes (Mix thoroughly by inversion)
Transport the samples to the lab within 4 hours. If this is not possible, make PPP (Platelet Poor Plasma) within 1 hour of collection as follows:
- Centrifuge sample at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes.
- Transfer supernatant to a clean plastic tube.
- Centrifuge this supernatant again at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes.
- Transfer the final supernatant (PPP) to 1 labeled, clean plastic screw-capped vial and freeze immediately.
Overnight fasting is preferred. A duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory. It is recommended that patients discontinue Heparin for 1 day and Oral Anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling, with prior consent from the treating physician.
