Natural Killer Cells Test
Introduction to the Natural Killer Cells Test
The Natural Killer Cells Test is a vital diagnostic tool used to assess the functionality of the immune system, specifically the activity of natural killer (NK) cells. These cells play a crucial role in the body’s defense against tumors and virally infected cells. By measuring the levels and activity of these cells, healthcare providers can gain insights into a patient’s immune health, particularly in individuals facing challenges such as cancer or recurrent abortions.
What the Test Measures
This test detects the presence and activity of CD3, CD16, and CD56 markers on natural killer cells through the method of flow cytometry. These markers are essential for understanding the immune response and identifying any abnormalities that may indicate underlying health issues.
Who Should Consider This Test?
Individuals who may benefit from the Natural Killer Cells Test include:
- Patients with a history of recurrent abortions
- Individuals diagnosed with cancer or undergoing cancer treatment
- Those experiencing unexplained immune deficiencies
Symptoms that may prompt testing include frequent infections, unusual fatigue, or unexplained weight loss.
Benefits of Taking the Test
Taking the Natural Killer Cells Test offers several benefits:
- Identifies immune system dysfunctions that may contribute to serious health issues.
- Guides oncologists and gynecologists in developing personalized treatment plans.
- Provides critical information for managing patient care effectively.
Understanding Your Results
Test results will indicate the levels of NK cell activity. A healthcare provider will interpret these results in conjunction with clinical history and symptoms to provide a comprehensive understanding of your immune health. Any abnormalities may require further investigation or intervention.
