Sample Collection and Pre-Test Instructions
For the Factor V Functional Test, a sample of 3 mL whole blood must be collected in a Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tube. It is crucial to mix the sample thoroughly by inversion and transport it to the lab within 4 hours. If immediate transport is not possible, plasma preparation should be done within 1 hour of collection by centrifuging the sample at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes and transferring the supernatant to a clean plastic tube. This supernatant should be centrifuged again and then frozen immediately for shipment.
Overnight fasting is preferred, and a duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory. Patients are advised to discontinue Heparin for 1 day and Oral Anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling, with prior consent from their treating physician.
