Thrombin Time TT Test
Introduction to the Thrombin Time TT Test
The Thrombin Time TT Test is a vital diagnostic tool used to evaluate the coagulation status of blood. It measures the time taken for a clot to form in a sample of blood after adding thrombin, an enzyme that converts fibrinogen to fibrin. This test is crucial in identifying potential bleeding disorders and monitoring patients on anticoagulant therapy.
What the Thrombin Time TT Test Measures
This test specifically measures the functionality of the common coagulation pathway, particularly focusing on the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. Prolonged thrombin time may indicate the presence of various coagulation disorders or the effects of anticoagulants.
Who Should Consider This Test?
Individuals who may benefit from the Thrombin Time TT Test include:
- Patients experiencing unexplained bleeding or bruising.
- Individuals undergoing anticoagulant therapy, such as warfarin.
- Those with a family history of bleeding disorders.
- Patients with liver disease or other conditions affecting coagulation.
Benefits of Taking the Thrombin Time TT Test
Taking the Thrombin Time TT Test offers numerous benefits, including:
- Early detection of coagulation disorders.
- Guidance for appropriate treatment plans for patients on anticoagulants.
- Monitoring the effectiveness of anticoagulant therapy.
- Providing essential information for surgical planning.
Understanding Your Results
Results from the Thrombin Time TT Test are typically available within a day. A prolonged thrombin time may suggest a deficiency in clotting factors or the presence of inhibitors. It is essential to discuss your results with a healthcare provider to understand the implications and necessary next steps.

Sample Collection Guidelines
The Thrombin Time TT Test requires:
- 3 mL whole blood in 1 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tube. Mix thoroughly by inversion.
- Transport to the lab within 4 hours. If this is not possible, make PPP within 1 hour of collection by centrifuging the sample at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes and transferring the supernatant to a clean plastic tube.
- Centrifuge this supernatant again at 3600 rpm for 15 minutes and finally transfer the supernatant (PPP) to 1 labelled clean plastic screw-capped vial. Freeze immediately and ship frozen. Do not thaw.
Pre-Test Instructions
Overnight fasting is preferred, and a duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory for the test.
